Sax Appeal is a hard-hitting satire magazine produced annually by students at the University of Cape Town. It raises over R750 000 for charity.
Designing Sax Appeal is a dream project – the content is, hopefully, highly entertaining, there is no client, there is almost unlimited creative freedom, and it has a distribution model that any publication designer would kill for.
In 2007 and 2008 I designed about 75 percent of the magazine, including the brand identity and marketing material. In 2008 we celebrated the 75th anniversary of Sax and delved into its rich history. This brought to the project an element of historical research that it doesn’t usually have.
